OH MY, ALONSO! The Mets Advance to the NLDS Against Phillies.
Down 2, time is running out. Pete Alonso with two runners on, no problem. The Mets star took on the pressure and completed the comeback for the Mets. It looked bleak after the Mets gave up back-to-back solo HRs, 2-0. Yet, they stayed in the fight and proved the same ole' Mets stereotypes wrong. Brewers closer Devin Williams gave Brewer fans flashbacks of former closer Josh Hader. It was reminiscent of Hader's 2019 wild card losing blown save against the Nationals and Juan Soto. This time, Pete Alonso served that role in sending Milwaukee home. With that homer, Alonso cemented himself in Mets history, making the winter a little more interesting. That is because Mets Owner Steve Cohen watched the game in the front row. So, only time will tell what he thought of Pete Alonso's homerun with his free agency looming. However, before that, they must finish the postseason, and the next stop is Philadelphia.
The division rival, Philadelphia Phillies, will host the New York Mets in a big-time matchup on Saturday. The Mets went 6-7 against the Phillies this season, but in their last series between 9/19 and 9/22, they won three out of four. The Phillies have been one of, if not the best, teams in baseball this season. This series will be tough for New York, especially coming from three straight games. The fatigue will be a factor, but that October momentum is no joke. If Francisco Lindor, Brandon Nimmo, and Pete Alonso can straighten out that 1-2-3 spot in the lineup, then the Mets have a chance. Guys like Mark Vientos, Sterling Marte, and Jesse Winker must consistently get on base instead of waiting until the 9th inning to get going. The pitching was solid this series; the offense needs to keep scoring. If the Mets keep it up, they could end up in the NLCS again; the last time they swept the Cubs was in 2015. This season has been a rollercoaster; only time will tell if it will pay for the Mets.
Mets, Phillies. Saturday. Game One.
